USA - On February 14th, A 19-year-old expelled student went on a shooting rampage at Margaery Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 people and wounding 16. Consequently, it is causing fear of guns in the United States. The shooting tragedy was the most tragic incident since last November, when the shooting killed 25 people at a church near San Antonio, Texas.
This is not the only case of US shootings. The United States had 11 school shootings this year in January alone. There have been over 290 shootings in US schools in the last six years. However, the US government has yet to come up with clear measures of gun possession laws and regulations to prevent more shootings. So, teenagers are participating in demonstrations that seek gun control. Thousands of people have demanded new gun safety laws in front of Florida's courts on February 17th and students carried signs that said, “Don't let my friends die”.
On February 21st, about 40 people, including six surviving students from the Parkland gun shooting incident, and the parents of the victims, talked with Trump about preventing the recurrence of the shooting spree. But in statement, Trump said, "If you had a teacher who was adept with the firearm, they could end the attack very quickly”. He suggested that arming 20 percent of teachers with guns would reduce school shootings. The comments provoked a lot of criticism not only in the United States but around the world.
According to the American Rifle Association, 270 million private guns are distributed in the United States. It is not difficult to get a gun license. Many American youths have access to guns at home, and shootings continue to unfairly take lives of innocent people. In a survey of about 1,000 American adults conducted by SSRS, 70 percent of respondents said gun control is " necessary". It is the highest figure since 1993 and represents the opinion of many Americans.
Guns are a great threat to others and a great deal of danger to you if you own them. In the United States, gun control legislation may be necessary because guns are killing many lives. South Korea also had a shooting rampage in June 2014, at a military base. It is illegal to carry guns in the country, but there are dangers everywhere. We also need to be aware of the dangers associated with guns as we follow the shooting events happening in the US.
