What is travel for you? Many people travel all around world to escape from their busy life, take a rest, or learn about another country's language and culture. Through travel they can experience unforgettable chances, meet new people, and get answers to big questions like, how should I live after I heal and rest? Travelers may also feel free by escaping their repeating everyday life and discover something about themselves and life. Let me share such insights as I tell you about my traveling to Taiwan.
I recently traveled to Taiwan, a popular traveling spot for Koreans. Taiwan is located nearby Korea. They have convenient public traffic systems, delicious food, a colorful night view, and safe public order so a lot of Koreans visit Taiwan. Generally, many people who travel to Taiwan go on a popular traveling course that visits many sites where movies were filmed. Some of these sites include "Tamsui," a famous location of the movie Secrets, "Jiufen," the background of the movie Spirited Away and Chihiro, and Shifen, the location of the film You Are the Apple of My Eye. Many travelers can leave their memories here. With their family or friends, lovers. When I visited Taiwan for the first time, I got a sightseeing trip by following the popular tourist course. I got a feeling of the Taiwanese culture and visited places that were filmed in movies. However, after I traveled to Taiwan a few times, I suddenly wondered what life was like for Taiwanese locals and what it was like in non-tourist places.
I then traveled to Yilan which is located near the capital Taipei. Yilan is a small city, about two hours drive from Taipei, and is the birthplace of Jimmy Liao, a Taiwanese national fairy tale writer. There many rice patties are arranged and unfold beautifully and small houses are gathered in clusters. Also, there is installation art on every corner of the city like Jimmy Park and Senlin Park. This gives an illusion of a fairy tale setting. In addition, there are various traditional shops on the Old Street Tour where you can see the traditional culture of Taiwan. On this tour you can learn about what Taiwanese culture has accepted and inherited. The local people who I met during my travel to Yilan kindly answered my questions. Children that I encountered happily introduced me to a famous place in Iran. Thanks to them, I have valuable memories.
Unlike Taipei, where there are many attractions, Iran was a city filled with common Taiwanese life and a place where you can truly feel the culture of Taiwan. Looking at the rice paddies and houses that were neatly arranged I recovered peace and felt freedom. I forgot about my busy everyday life. The village was like a fairytale which gave me healing. Also, after meeting the kind children, I realized we can feel 'together' despite having different cultures and languages.
Similar to this, every time I travel I realize my worth and at the same time get answers about what I should pursue in my life and what I need to do in the future. The experiences I have gained from traveling have given me a chance to gain courage to start new things. Additionally, many people whom I have met when traveling have given me opportunity to think and learn in different ways. What is the right attitude in a society that lives beyond the boundaries of race, culture, and language? If you need a new experience and change of pace, or if you just want to take a rest and feel happiness, I say to you, "Take a trip right now!"
