On Dec. 27, a refurbished site of a former Cheongju cigarette factory became the fourth National Museum of Contemporary Art.

Located in Naedok-dong, near Cheongju University, the opening exhibit is  ‘A Day for Counting Stars: The Story of You & Me’. The exhibition is open until June, 16th 2019.

The museum slogan is ‘openness, communication, and recycle.’

Creative Recycling

The former cigarette factory, opened in 1946 and closed in 2004, was empty. Remodeling for the new space began on March, 2017, Cheongju transformed the space into a cultural space for citizens.

First, the art preservation process is open to the public for the first time in Korea. There is visible storage, where visitors can see art that is not on display, on the first, second and third floors. Visitors can openly explore the stored art on the first and third floors. It is modeled on a typical openness museum named ‘Schaulager’ in Basel, Switzerland.

Visitors can see the conservation science department located on the third floor. Later this year, the Larchiveum will open. Combining the words ‘library’, ‘archives’, and ‘museum’, the Larchiveum in the third floor allows visitors to get more information about art beginning in November, 2019.

The museum building in Cheongju follows other creative reuse projects.

The  ‘Power House Museum’ in Australia. It is a public museum that has a  Boulton and Watt steam engine from 1785, known as the oldest in the world. In 1899, when the power plant ran out of life, it also was empty for many years. Remodelling for the museum was finished in 1988. Another example is the Shougang Museum in Beijing, a repurposed steel plant.

The next major exhibition  ‘The Adventure of Contemporary Painting’ will be held in the second half of this year. Future shows in the museum calendar are a Modern Art Exhibition of Lee Jung Seop and Kim Whan Ki in 2020.

Cheongju Hall is open from 10am to 6 p.m. on Tuesday to Friday. For more information, please visit this website. (
