Disney+ is an Over the Top Service (OTT) launched by Walt Disney Company in 2019. OTT is a service that provides various media contents such as broadcasting programs, movies, and education, etc. through the Internet. On November 12, 2019, Disney+ was officially launched in the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands. It was launched in Australia, New Zealand, and Puerto Rico on November 19, 2019. In addition, on March 31, 2020, the following countries will launch Disney+: Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, and Sweden. For South Korea, it plans to launch in 2021, but the exact date has not yet been disclosed. Let’s learn about Disney+, which is receiving lots of expectations from Disney fans all over the world.

Price of Disney+ and Services Offered

Similar to Netflix which is another OTT, Disney+ has a monthly fixed-rate system that costs $6.99 a month and $69.99 a year. Also, it offers seven days for free experience to users. Disney+ provides an unlimited service that allows users to watch more than 7,500 TV series, and 500 movies from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, 21st Century Fox, and National Geographic. All works provided by this service can be streamed to a maximum of 4K resolution and be downloaded.

Users can also watch original works and classic Disney films that can only be found in Disney+ service. Despite the high popularity of classic films made by Disney, few companies have adopted classic-Disney films as streaming services so far, and there was only a limited way to purchase them at the cost of $10 to $20 per film. However, Disney+ offers these films to users to watch whenever they want.

With Disney+, most content will be available for all ages, while shows made for adults will be replaced by the existing streaming service ‘Hulu’.

Strengths and Weaknesses of Disney+

Comparing to other streaming services, Disney+ has the advantage of funding. Disney announced that it is prepared to risk a loss for five years, and it will provide at least a few years of high-cost services with a large scale of investment. The price of $6.99 a month that Disney+ charges is cheaper than Netflix. In addition, Netflix supports up to four devices for simultaneous use and allows up to five profile settings, while Disney+ allows at least four devices for simultaneous use and allows up to seven profiles.

The aforementioned advantages are great, but Disney+ also has drawbacks. Not providing adult content with strong sensational tendencies can be a weakness. This is the point that a chief communication officer (CCO) of Netflix mentioned. Also, through his interview, he compared Disney+ to Netflix and said there is another weakness of Disney+. He said that Disney+ lacks in diversity because it is composed of content based on existing franchises, while Netflix provides various content that numerous creators from around the world have created.

New York Times said, “Power of Disney+ is like hitting Thor’s magic hammer. There will be a perceptual shift that changes everything”. With the advent of Disney+, the OTT market is on edge. The Seowon News is looking forward to seeing how much Korea will be affected by the launch of Disney+ in 2021.
