How to Prevent Rhinitis

When spring comes, the weather gets warmer, and pollen starts to flutter. During spring, we can see people around us sniffling because of allergies and the change of the season. We often describe this as having ‘rhinitis’. In fact, according to statistics from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, it showed that the number of patients with allergies related rhinitis was over 15 million in 2019.

Rhinitis generally refers to inflammation and swelling in the nose. Typical types of rhinitis include allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinitis, and acute rhinitis. There are various causes of rhinitis such as allergic reactions to food or the environment, side effects to drugs, and decreased immunity. Symptoms include sneezing, a runny nose, and a stuffy nose.

There are long-term treatments in the medical world using steroid drugs, but there is no certain cure for rhinitis medically. Students at Seowon University, however, can alleviate symptoms of rhinitis if they tame some of the habits which are shared below.

First of all, at home, you should eliminate the environment in which allergies can occur. Since there are various allergies such as cold air and dust allergies, keep the temperature inside the house between 20 and 25 Celsius degrees, and clean and ventilate the house frequently. Also, to get rid of germs, wash and sterilize furniture, bedding, and dishware.

Also, you should wear face masks or scarves when you go outside. In spring, sometimes cold winds can blow because of the last cold snap, so you should be careful about temperature changes. The respiratory system should also be protected from exposure to yellow and fine dust, and pollen.

Lastly, lavage the inside of your nose with saline, and place pressure around your nose with your fingers. These methods are easy for you to do yourself, anytime and anywhere. Put saline solution in a syringe with a mixture of saline and lukewarm water, and wash your nose every day in the morning or evening. Also, if you press the blood spots on both ends of your nose whenever you have a runny nose, it is effective in preventing this symptom.

As mentioned above, rhinitis has no 100 percent complete treatment. However, if you have these habits by familiarizing yourself with the methods given above, you can weaken the symptoms of rhinitis. Then you will not suffer from rhinitis by practicing these behaviors.
