The destruction of the ozone layer is known as one of the causes of global warming. The ozone is also divided into harmful and beneficial sections. The ozone is good for eradicating germs, fungi, and viruses. However, if the concentration of the ozone exceeds the environmental standard of 0.06 ppm, it adversely affects a person’s respiratory or eyes. The ozone is also known to prevent ultraviolet (UV) rays. If the ozone layer is destroyed, humans are highly likely to develop skin cancer because there would be no protection against UV rays.
In late March, a massive ozone hole was observed in the Arctic, the biggest hole observed in a decade. On April 28, the sudden disappearance of the ozone hole became a big issue. One possibility is that the disappearance of the hole is a result of people not creating as much pollution due to quarantine practices as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, indicating that the environment is getting a chance to heal with the decrease in pollution.
However, the fact of why the hole suddenly disappeared was due to different influences. According to the European Space Agency’s Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service (CAMS), it was caused by the ‘polar vortex’, which is a strong and low pressure mass that rotates in the upper Antarctic and Arctic layers. The agency explained that the vortex rotates and generates or dissipates ozone holes.
Many people around the world are interested in the phenomenon of ozone holes that occur frequently at the poles of the Earth. The reason why the whole world is paying attention to the phenomenon of ozone depletion is because it is a global problem. Many countries around the world have signed environmental agreements to reduce the destruction of the ozone layer.
Many countries are changing little by little, controlling chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), the most likely factor in destroying the ozone layer. However, environmental experts explain that it takes a long time for the gas to completely disappear due to its period of stay. For these reasons, we should make more efforts as global citizens of the global era to control gas emission.
As we are well aware, individuals should refrain from using products that produce CFC. Examples include the using of hair sprays and refrigerants in refrigerators. Scientists have developed hydrofluorocarbon (HCFC) as a substitute for CFC, but it has also been found to be the main culprit behind carbon dioxide emissions. However, many countries are using HCFC because there are no complete replacements yet.
Also, the identity of the Green Party working for the environment should be established. Already, the Green Party’s movement to protect the environment is active in advanced countries such as England and Germany. In Korea, however, the power of the Green Party is very weak. The purpose of the Green Party is to protect the environment, but in the case of Korea, the movement for the socially disadvantaged is stronger. Hopefully, the Green Party will establish its identity as soon as possible and become active.
Many scientists, along with the efforts of people, estimate how long the Earth will be healthy enough to support the human life. How long it takes for the Earth’s environmental problems to be solved depends on whether or not people collectively change their attitudes and work together to reduce pollution. People who do not make any efforts and just want the Earth to endure, and those who do not recognize the seriousness of the environmental problems, will delay and prevent any chances of allowing the Earth to recover. Thus, people’s active efforts can solve the environmental problems created by humans and save the sick Earth and people living in it.
