Can the World Be Changed with This Movement?

On May 25, 2020, a 46-year-old black man named George Floyd, was killed by a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, in Minneapolis, USA. The police officer crushed Floyd's neck with his knee until he died as he was being arrested for using counterfeit notes. Floyd kept saying that he could not breathe while Chauvin was strangling him, but Chauvin ignored him.

The reason why people are angered again by this incident is the official report of the police, which reported the incident differently than what people observed the videos. The report conveyed the ruthless attitudes of the police towards black people by shifting the cause of death from the police to Floyd. Therefore, Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement caught fire for support as the videos of the incident spread on social media. It remains unknown whether or not the movement BLM will change the world to improve black lives.

Have you ever heard of the Black Lives Matter? BLM is a black human rights movement that began in 2012. The overall meaning of this movement is "Black lives are also precious". In 2012, a 17-year-old black boy, Toray-burn Martin, was shot by a white security guard, George Zimmerman. However, the security guard was found not guilty. That was how the BLM movement began. In other words, the movement was initiated by the abuse of public power against blacks.

The on-going protests have spread to many countries outside of North America and Europe, including London, Paris, and Canada. People are chanting slogans such as "Black Lives Matter", "No Justice, No Peace", and "I Can't Breathe". Among these chants, "I Can’t Breathe." is chanted because this was the last thing that Floyd said before he died.

People also make kneeling gestures during the movement. They kneel down for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. The length of the time is that Floyd's neck was crushed by the police's knee. Regardless of race, many people are participating in BLM, and also some police officers are kneeling down together.

The Seowon News interviewed several students at Seowon University about BLM. Hwang Sae-bin who is in the department of Fashion Design said, "The George Floyd incident seems to rekindle the flames of the movement. I hope BLM will continue to spread and serve an opportunity for the world to change".

Shin So-young, a student in the Hotel Cooking department, also said, "I think it is absolutely right to participate in the movement for human dignity, freedom, and equality". She added, "But I don’t think it's right to maliciously threaten or loot others through the movement. So activists should be careful".

BLM is a years-long demonstration, but it is still only the beginning. Black Lives Matter is an obvious truth. However, for years, people have been asserting that black lives are also important. The necessity to assert this indicates that we are living in a world where black people cannot live freely.

Because of the Black Lives Matter movement, there is a small change in the Premier League. The soccer players’ names on their uniforms are replaced with "Black Lives Matter". There are lots of black players in the Premier League. They also had a hard time because of racism. However, the world is changing a little bit with the movement, as the message of Black Lives Matter has become louder and stronger.

Attention is focusing on whether the Black Lives Matter movement will change society in meaningful ways where racism still exists and is in full bloom. Only time will tell.
